Madison Metropolitan School District

LGBTQIA+ Equity in MMSD

As a school district, MMSD is committed to creating inclusive and welcoming learning communities to ensure that all students are able to graduate college, career, and community ready. We take seriously our responsibility to provide safe and nondiscriminatory environments for all students.

The Madison Metropolitan School District will not waver in our commitment to providing all students access to an inclusive education that affirms all identities. It is our goal that these resources will improve our efforts to provide safe, healthy and positive school environments for all transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive youth.

5 Helpful Tips

  1. Everyone needs a support system, but this is especially true for LGBTQIA+ individuals. Surround yourself with friends, family, or mentors who love you unconditionally.

  2. You may find yourself in situations where others aren't understanding or even hostile towards your identity. Keep in mind that it's okay to let go of toxic relationships in your life, and avoid putting yourself in unsafe situations as much as possible.

  3. Connecting with the LGBTQIA+ community can help you find others who empathize with what you're going through. Look for LGBTQIA+ clubs, support groups, or community centers in your area to meet people who understand what you're going through.

  4. Mental health is an important component of self-care and members of the queer/trans community are especially vulnerable. If you struggle with depression, anxiety, or another mental health issue, tell a loved one and seek professional help as needed.

  5. Remember that there is a difference between self-love and being self-absorbed. It's okay to be proud of who you are and take steps towards healthy self-esteem.
